This gives you the opportunity to self drive on the return journey. You don't even have to choose a package tour. You have the flexibility to simply use the motorail service as a one-way means to your destination, where you can explore the many tourist attractions and unique, diverse landscape that Australia has to offer at your own pace. 

  • Caravans, boat trailers, motor bikes, roof loaded boats or canoes will not be accepted.
  • Passenger luggage left in vehicles along with the vehicle itself is conveyed at the owner's risk.

Vehicle Conditions

  • Vehicles must not be lower than 150mm above ground level loaded this includes any side skirts or front and rear spoilers.
  • Vehicles must not exceed 2100mm in height, 2100mm in width, or 5270 mm in length, this is to include the outer most extremity of permissible dimensions.
  • The wheels of vehicles fitted with large tyres or dual rear wheels must not exceed 480mm, with 940mm between each slot.

  • Rates for unaccompanied vehicles available on request. As of 1 April 2008 unaccompanied Motorail cannot be booked from one train to the other. Unaccompanied Motorail can only be booked on the same train on an entire journey with no stopovers.
  • Maximum width 2.2m.
  • Maximum height Sydney - Adelaide 1.57m
  • Maximum height Melbourne - Adelaide 1.57m
  • Maximum height Adelaide - Darwin 2.00m.
  • Roof racks, wind deflectors, louvers etc must be removed before loading. The length of any towbar should be included. Caravans, including pop tops and boats are not able to be conveyed by Motorail.
  • Vehicles must be roadworthy at time of loading and capable of being driven onto carrier.
